Wero is a European digital wallet and instant payment solution launched in July 2024 by the European Payments Initiative (EPI) consortium. It was developed as a sovereign alternative to global payment giants, providing a unified system for account-to-account transfers across Europe. The service allows users to send and receive money in real-time using only a phone number or QR code, significantly simplifying the payment process by removing the need for traditional IBAN entries. The system is managed by EPI Company SE, which is headquartered in Brussels, Belgium. Founded in 2020, the consortium consists of major European banks and payment providers working together to create a seamless payment ecosystem. Wero is progressively replacing local solutions, such as France's Paylib, and continues to expand its reach across the Eurozone, supporting person-to-person transfers, e-commerce, and point-of-sale transactions.
