Airwallex becomes a payment provider for OpenTable restaurants
Partnership launches in the US and Canada
Airwallex and OpenTable have entered a commercial partnership that makes Airwallex a payment provider for restaurants using the OpenTable platform. Restaurants will be able to use Airwallex to process eligible payments, including deposits and prepaid Experiences.
These payments can help restaurants secure bookings, collect revenue in advance and reduce no-shows. The partnership launches in the United States and Canada, with Australia and Mexico expected to follow.
Prepayments help reduce no-shows
OpenTable data for 2025 shows that prepaid Experiences were associated with 45% fewer no-shows and 66% fewer late cancellations than Experiences without prepayment.
The partnership comes ahead of a busy period for restaurants that includes holiday celebrations and corporate events. During periods of higher demand, restaurants will have another option for offering payment-enabled bookings.
Philipp Reichardt, VP of Enterprise at Airwallex, said restaurants should be able to focus on their guests rather than unnecessary complexity behind the scenes. He said that bringing Airwallex to OpenTable gives restaurants more choice in managing payments and extends Airwallex’s global infrastructure to the restaurant platform.
Infrastructure for international expansion
Airwallex combines local payment capabilities with direct connections to card networks. This allows businesses to accept and manage payments across markets and currencies, and is intended to support OpenTable’s restaurant network as the partnership expands into more countries.
Founded in Australia in 2015, Airwallex serves more than 675,000 businesses directly or through platform customers. It holds more than 85 licences across North and Latin America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific.
Robin Chiang, Chief Growth Officer at OpenTable, said Airwallex’s global footprint and payment capabilities make it a strong addition to OpenTable’s payments offering. Expanding the range of payment providers reflects OpenTable’s aim to give restaurant operators the financial flexibility to run their businesses efficiently. With Airwallex added to its existing options, OpenTable gives restaurants a choice of provider for prepaid bookings.
