Barclaycard Payments deploys Visa Unified Checkout for UK merchants

Barclaycard Payments has deployed Visa Unified Checkout for its merchant customers in the UK. The solution gives businesses access to multiple payment capabilities through a single integration and is intended to simplify payment acceptance and support ecommerce conversion.

The deployment builds on a relationship between Barclaycard Payments and Visa that spans around six decades of work across payments and acceptance.

Unified Checkout is integrated into Smartpay Fuse

Through the integration, merchants can offer cards, Click to Pay and digital wallets. The solution also supports additional payment experiences such as Pay by Link and invoicing, alongside built-in value-added services.

Bringing these capabilities into one connection is intended to make customer journeys more consistent across payment channels. It also reduces the need for merchants to manage each payment method through a separate integration.

Low-code architecture reduces development requirements

Visa Unified Checkout is designed as a low-code solution, allowing merchants to add new payment capabilities without significant development work. At the same time, its modular and API-driven architecture allows businesses to adapt their checkout as customer preferences change.

Dan Parsons, Head of Value Added Services at Visa UK & Ireland, said the objective is to make it easier for merchants to adopt new payment capabilities without rebuilding their checkout for every new method. Visa positions Unified Checkout as a solution for acquirers and the merchants they serve.

Barclaycard Payments expands payment options through its gateway

The deployment follows a model in which Visa provides checkout technology and Barclaycard Payments distributes it to merchants through its own gateway. Integrating Unified Checkout into Smartpay Fuse expands the gateway's payment capabilities without requiring merchants to connect each method separately.

Ben Stagg, Head of Mid-Corporate at Barclaycard Payments, said broader payment choice can benefit businesses but can also become difficult to manage as they grow. The company expects the single-integration model to simplify payment acceptance while supporting security, visibility and adaptation to changing customer expectations.

Focus on simpler merchant payment operations

Barclaycard Payments presents the deployment as part of its role in supporting merchant growth. Combining several payment experiences within one solution is intended to reduce operational complexity and the amount of work required to maintain separate payment integrations.

The integration also allows merchants to expand payment choice while keeping checkout management within Smartpay Fuse.
