Coinbase introduces agentic wallets
Coinbase has developed a cryptocurrency wallet infrastructure designed specifically for AI agents.
The cryptocurrency exchange points out that although AI agents are becoming increasingly common, they face a serious limitation when they need to perform an action that requires the use of money. In other words, they can analyze, recommend, and plan, but without access to financial infrastructure, they are unable to actually act.
In response, Coinbase created a wallet infrastructure that gives agents the ability to independently spend, earn, and trade funds while maintaining enterprise-grade security and programmable control mechanisms.
The company emphasizes that enabling AI agents to store and manage funds paves the way for the development of autonomous DeFi, machine economy, agentic commerce, and multi-chain operations performed by agents.
Agentic Wallets are fully integrated with the Coinbase Developer Platform, offering authentication, usage telemetry, and security monitoring through the CDP Portal. On the technical side, agents use non-custodial wallets secured in Trusted Execution Environments (TEE), which ensures true self-control over funds while maintaining the security standards required by enterprises.
The architecture has been designed for full operational autonomy. It includes a set of Agent Skills, i.e., ready-made financial operations such as trading, earning, or sending funds, the x402 protocol as a machine-to-machine payment standard, the CDP Wallets infrastructure providing secure and non-custodial wallets, Security Suite with programmable control rules and compliance mechanisms, and CDP Portal for monitoring usage and managing agents.
We are moving from AI agents that advise to agents that act. From assistants that suggest to helpers that perform tasks. From tools that require constant human supervision to autonomous systems that operate independently within trusted control mechanisms. Agentic Wallets provide the fundamental infrastructure for this transformation—giving agents the financial capabilities necessary to operate autonomously while maintaining the level of security and trust required by enterprises."
