Fiserv launches digital asset platform with Bank of North Dakota's Roughrider Coin
Fiserv has launched its digital asset platform with Bank of North Dakota as the first live deployment. The implementation uses Roughrider Coin, a US dollar-backed stablecoin designed to support money movement across the state's interbank network.
VersaBank acts as issuer, Fireblocks provides digital asset infrastructure and tokenisation services, and transactions are processed on the Solana blockchain. The deployment brings stablecoin settlement into existing banking infrastructure rather than creating a separate payment channel.
Roughrider Coin supports interbank transactions in North Dakota
Bank of North Dakota is using the platform's issuance, reserve, custody and settlement capabilities to introduce Roughrider Coin into banking and payment workflows across the state. More than 90 participating banks and credit unions can use the token for bank-to-bank transactions.
The bank also intends to use the stablecoin as a foundation for additional digital money use cases. Participating institutions access Roughrider Coin through Commercial Center, Fiserv's commercial online banking platform.
Because these institutions already use Commercial Center for traditional interbank transfers, stablecoin transactions can be handled through the same environment. This allows digital asset transactions to operate alongside existing money movement processes.
VersaBank manages issuance, custody and reserves
VersaBank is responsible for minting and burning Roughrider Coin, as well as custody and reserve asset management. The company identifies these functions as the core infrastructure required for financial institutions to operate stablecoins within a regulated framework.
David Taylor, Founder and President of VersaBank, said the combination of Fiserv's scale and VersaBank's regulated digital asset capabilities creates a foundation for integrating stablecoins into established banking and payment systems.
Bank of North Dakota positions the token as a new interbank tool
Don Morgan, Chief Executive Officer of Bank of North Dakota, said the launch gives community banks and credit unions a new way to move money across the state's interbank network. He positioned the project as an extension of the bank's work with financial partners supporting agriculture, commerce and industry in North Dakota.
Fiserv targets broader digital asset use cases
Beyond the initial deployment, Fiserv is positioning the platform for financial institutions, corporates, marketplaces and fintechs. Supported use cases include stablecoin card issuance, cross-border payments, programmable commerce and treasury automation.
The platform also supports tokenised deposits and global currency account services, including USD accounts for financial institutions worldwide.
Stablecoins move into existing banking infrastructure
Fiserv presents the launch as a step toward wider commercial use of stablecoin-enabled banking and payments. The company's existing infrastructure spans payments, account processing, digital banking, merchant acquiring, network services, ecommerce and the Clover business management platform.
The Roughrider Coin deployment places stablecoin settlement within that existing ecosystem. Fiserv also plans to extend the same issuance and settlement capabilities to additional institutions and use cases included in its product roadmap.
