Hormuud Telecom is partnering with GIZ to support cross-border payments and digital integration within the East African Community (EAC)
Hormuud Telecom Somalia Inc. announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with GIZ to support the development of an inclusive digital economy across the East African region.
This partnership is part of the East African Community’s (EAC) digital transformation program, with a particular focus on developing cross-border payment systems and supporting the creation of cost-effective digital initiatives that can be implemented on a large scale across all member states.
As part of this partnership, GIZ Tanzania and the East African Community will also collaborate with Hormuud Telecom to strengthen the development of digital and artificial intelligence skills, with the aim of improving employment opportunities for young people across the region.
In addition, the memorandum of understanding covers broader development priorities, including support for financing climate action and nature-based solutions, as well as regulatory advice aimed at facilitating access to European markets for digital initiatives from East Africa.
This agreement reflects the growing collaboration between telecommunications operators and development partners, aimed at accelerating the process of digital integration, ensuring cross-border connectivity, and supporting sustainable economic growth across East Africa.
