PayPo: Romanian users choose BNPL an average of six times a year
PayPo reported that its 300,000 users in Romania make an average of six BNPL purchases a year. The company’s data also shows that more than 65% of its Romanian users return to the payment method after their first transaction.
BNPL for repeat and higher-value purchases
More than 35% of PayPo’s active users in Romania have completed over five transactions. Between 20% and 30% have used deferred or instalment payments for purchases that PayPo associates with higher values.
Women account for 80% of purchases made through the platform, while men account for 20%. The average basket value for men is approximately EUR 58, compared with around EUR 53 for women.
Raul Durma, General Manager of PayPo Romania, says Romanian consumers are becoming more open to digital shopping and moving away from cash on delivery. He says flexibility includes both the option to defer payment and transparency in payment management. Further BNPL growth, he expects, will depend on improvements to digital shopping experiences and consumer trust in new payment methods.
Popular categories and seasonal peaks
Clothing and footwear are the leading BNPL categories for both women and men. Beauty products, children’s items, and pet products follow. PayPo identifies Black Friday and the winter holidays as peak periods for online retail. The company expects seasonal demand to support interest in BNPL in 2026 and help retailers meet customer expectations.
PayPo also shared results from one of its merchant partners. In its second year of offering BNPL, the retailer recorded a 37.3% increase in revenue and a 30.8% rise in transaction numbers compared with the first year. Average basket value grew by 8.7%.
BNPL’s share of Romanian ecommerce
PayPo estimates that BNPL currently accounts for around 4% of ecommerce volume in Romania. The company sees potential for that share to double in about three years.
PayPo launched in Poland in 2017 and entered Romania in 2022, its first market outside its home country. The company works with more than 66,000 merchants and serves over 2.5 million users.
