Visa is introducing smart authorization to increase payment approval rates and improve efficiency
Visa has announced the launch of Visa Intelligent Authorization — a new feature of the Visa Acceptance Platform that enables transaction processors (banks and other financial institutions that process payments for merchants) to modernize their payment processing workflows through a single API, eliminating the need for costly and time-consuming infrastructure maintenance or development.
Authorization is the foundation of digital payments: merchant service providers send real-time authorization requests through card networks to the banks that issue cards to consumers, which approve or decline the transaction within seconds. However, many older authorization platforms were not designed with the continuous availability, smart solutions, and regulatory flexibility required in modern commerce, resulting in lower approval rates, higher operating costs, greater complexity in compliance processes, and slower expansion into new payment methods, industries, and markets.
The Visa Intelligent Authorization solution helps address these challenges by providing a modern authorization capability that enables transaction processing across major global and local card networks through a single integration. The solution delivers 99.999% availability[1] and achieves an average acceptance rate of 96.3%[2] worldwide, representing industry-leading performance. It can be deployed as a card transaction processor’s primary authorization processor or as a complementary solution to enhance resilience—supporting business continuity and data recovery while expanding capabilities within existing infrastructure.
The Visa Intelligent Authorization solution can help payment service providers approve more valid transactions, manage risk more effectively, and improve operational efficiency by providing real-time analytics and up-to-date payment insights that reduce friction at every stage of the transaction cycle and accelerate processes such as settlement.
"The retail industry is changing rapidly, and transaction processors need an authorization infrastructure that keeps pace with these changes. However, many transactions are still processed on legacy systems built for a different era. Visa Intelligent Authorization modernizes payment processing through a single API that spans major global and local card networks, delivering greater reliability today and readiness for future challenges.” – Leila Serhan, Senior Vice President and Country Manager for North Africa, the Levant, and Pakistan (NALP), Visa
