Postbank has obtained a financial services provider license from the Sectoral Supervisory Authority
Postbank has been officially registered by the Financial Sector Supervisory Authority as a licensed financial services provider (FSP), marking a significant milestone in its transformation into a fully-fledged retail bank. Mondli Gungubele of the Department of Communications and Digital Technology welcomed this development, noting that it is a sign of progress in strengthening the institution.
The license, issued under the Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services Act (FAIS), authorizes Postbank to provide financial advisory and intermediary services within a regulated legal framework. To obtain and maintain this status, the institution must meet rigorous standards in corporate governance, compliance, risk management, operational capability, and consumer protection, thereby ensuring responsible participation in South Africa’s financial sector.
This listing reflects ongoing efforts to transform Postbank into a stable, well-managed state-owned bank capable of serving underserved communities and supporting the delivery of government financial services. It is also part of the bank’s five-year transformation strategy, which is built on the pillars of stabilizing operations, building capacity, and differentiating its service offering. In recent years, the focus has been on strengthening corporate governance, improving regulatory compliance, and laying the groundwork for long-term growth, and the FSP license represents a key step in expanding the service offering.
For customers, and especially for those receiving social assistance, this change provides an additional assurance that services are provided within a regulated framework designed to protect consumers and promote transparency and accountability. For the government and stakeholders, this represents further progress in enhancing financial inclusion and expanding access to affordable financial services for communities with limited access to such services.
Reaching this milestone also supports Postbank’s long-term goal of obtaining a full commercial banking license from the South African Reserve Bank through the Prudential Regulatory Authority, as the bank continues on its path to becoming a fully-fledged commercial bank, contributing to the strength and stability of the national financial system.
